Oasis was formed out of a group originally named Rain, which was comprised of friends Paul McGuigan, Chris Hutton, Paul Arthurs, and Tony McCarroll. The schoolboys later added buddy Liam Gallagher to take over lead vocals, and the band soon changed their name to Oasis. Liam’s brother, Noel Gallagher, was involved with the work of other bands at the time of Oasis’ formation, and as the group was in need of a lead guitarist and back-up vocalist, Noel was asked to join the band. Noel accepted on the condition that he would be the bandleader and would oversee all of the band’s work.
Early Years:
Following Noel Gallagher’s takeover of Oasis, the band spent much of 1991 and 1992 practicing and fine-tuning their sound, recording demos, and playing small venues. In spring 1993, the band caught their first big break as they were discovered and almost immediately signed by Alan McGee, an owner of a major British record label. Nearly one year later, Oasis released their first single, “Supersonic,” which found immediate chart success.

Critical acclaim for Oasis’ singles “Live Forever” and “Shakermaker” began to garner the band much attention in the UK before they had even released their debut album. When Definitely Maybe was released in 1994, it debuted at #1 and became the fastest-selling debut in UK history. Fans and critics alike praised the group for crafting songs with Beatle-like melodies and Rolling Stone grit, as well as borrowing pieces from past hits. Although the Gallagher brothers fought quite often, and the band stirred up a good deal of controversy due to their arrogance, the band continued to churn out huge hits such as “Some Might Say” and “Wonderwall,” helping their 1995 sophomore release (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? become the third highest selling album in UK history.
As Oasis became legends in Britain, the band began seeing some success in the US as well. Several of the hit songs from their second album hit the US rock charts. In 1995 and 1996, “Live Forever,” “Wonderwall” and “Champaign Supernova” were top five modern rock hits. This helped US sales of (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?. However, “Wonderwall” was the only Oasis song to ever crack the top 10 on the US pop singles chart. Because of this, Oasis never became mainstream American stars as they had in their homeland, but instead they had to settle with having a strong following of rock faithful.
In 1997, Oasis released Be Here Now and shattered first day UK sales records. It also reached #2 in the US charts. Overall, the album did not sell as well as it’s predecessors, and it generated fewer hit singles. The band began seeing some personnel changes as well. After a good deal of touring on both sides of the pond, Oasis released Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants in 2000, Heathen Chemistry in 2002, and Don’t Believe The Truth in 2005. Although sales have dwindled considerably since the band’s beginning (Don't Believe the Truth sold only 3 million copies worldwide compared with more than 7 million of each of their first 3 albums), and the Gallagher brothers are the only remaining original members, Oasis will forever be seen by UK fans as having defined a decade.
